ということで、今回は哲学ってなに？というテーマを中心に、そのわかりにくさの理由と原語をたどったそもそもの哲学の意味について書きたいと思います。

「哲学」についての考え方やイメージ。

哲学とは広義に、深淵な真理の探求と言えます。あらゆるものごとの、確からしいあるいは自分なりの答えを探る活動が主になされているからです。ここには哲学への畏敬の念も込められています。
しかし一方で、哲学を非難することもまた哲学であるとされます。
議論はありますが、一番最初の哲学者は紀元前６世紀に活躍したタレスです。
このタレスが活躍した時代でももうすでに、そのような哲学及び哲学者への冷評はありました。
その後、ソクラテス・プラトン・アリストテレスのギリシア三大哲学者が活躍する紀元前５世紀から４世紀になると、そのような哲学無用論及び有害論は文章として完全な形で残されることになります。
空に気を取られて穴に落ちるタレス『テアイテトス』より
例えば、プラトンはその著書『テアイテトス』でタレスのエピソードを交え哲学者についてこう語っています。
タレスは天体観測をして空を見上げていました。
彼は上空ばかりに気を取られ、足元が不注意になっていたため、穴に落ちてしまいました。
それを見た奴隷の女はこう言ってタレスをからかいます。
「あなた様は熱心に天のことを知ろうとなさいますが、ご自分の面前のことや足元のことにはお気づきにならないのですね。」
プラトンは、このような冷たい評価が哲学者全員に当てはまると述べています。
哲学者のような類の人間たちは、自分の近くのものについて、それが何をしているのか、それが人間かそれとも動物かということさえほとんど知らずに過ごしていると。
プラトンは、彼ら哲学者たちが知ろうと探求していることは、人間とは何かということや人間の本性に属する事柄であると記しました。
カリクレスの哲学非難『ゴルギアス』より
プラトンの著作から哲学非難のエピソードをもう一つ。
彼はその著書『ゴルギアス』の中で、アテナイの政治家カリクレスに次のように語らせています。
哲学というのは、若い時にほどよく触れておく分には結構なものです。
しかし必要以上に哲学に関わっていると、人間を破滅させてしまうことになるでしょう。
なぜなら哲学に没頭しすぎる人間は、国家社会の法律や規則に無知な人間になるからです。
また、公私の様々な取り決めにあたって人々と交渉するための術も知らずに、人間が持っている様々な快楽や欲望にも無経験な者になってしまうのです。
そしてカリクレスは最後に、衝撃的な一言を発します。
実際、いい年になっても、まだ哲学をしていて、それから抜け出ようとしない者を見たりするときは、ソクラテスよ、そんな男はもう、ぶん殴ってやらなければならないと僕は思うのだ。

「哲学」のわかりにくさの理由
始めに哲学がわかりにくいのには理由があると言いました。
ここではその理由を以下３つ書いてみたいと思います。
- 訳語「哲学」は正しく訳されていない…元々は「希哲学」だったが「哲学」になり、本来の「愛」の意味が抜けてしまった。
- 原語「Philosophia」から学問の内容がわからない…「知を愛し求めること」は他の学問でもなされていること。
- 研究対象が特別定まっていない…哲学の研究対象はこの世界のあらゆるもの。
訳語「哲学」は正しく訳されていない

じゃあどうして「哲学」という訳語が付いたのか見ていこうか。
そもそも、ギリシア語で「哲学」は「Philosophia（フィロソフィア）」といいます。
「Philosophia（フィロソフィア）」は、愛を意味する「Philos（フィロス）」と知を意味する「Sophia（ソフィア）」が合体したもの。
つまり、知を愛し求めることという意味を持っています。
この「Philosophia（フィロソフィア）」を語源に英語の「Philosophy（フィロソフィ）」が生まれ、そこからさらに日本語に訳したのが、慶応・明治の思想家であった西周（にしあまね）です。
しかし当時は現在のような「哲学」ではなく、「希哲学」という単語でした。
これは西が、１１世紀・宋の儒学者の文献から採用したもの。
この「希哲学」は、求めるという意味を持つ「希」と明らかであることや知識を意味する「哲」が組み合わされており、まさに言語である「Philosophia（フィロソフィア）」の意味をそのまま受け継ぐように訳されていました。
しかし、この「希哲学」という言葉が生まれた１２年後の明治７年に、西は自身の著書で「希哲学」を「哲学」と記します。

これには諸説あります。
一説には、「希哲学」を中国の文献から採用したため、希哲学が中国の学問ではないかと誤解を生むと考えられたから、という説。
また「希」の文字をシンプルに書き忘れたという説もあります。
やがて明治１０年に日本で初めて哲学科が誕生すると、一般にも哲学という訳語が定着していきました。

先ほども書いたように、哲学の原語であるギリシア語の「Philosophia」は「知を愛し求めること」という意味を持っています。
しかしこの「知を愛し求めること」は、学問一般の精神を表すものでもあります。
つまり、知を愛し求めるのは、何も哲学に固有の性質ではないということです。

他の学問では大抵の場合、原語に戻れば学問の内容や特徴を理解することができます。
例えば、生物学は英語で「biology（バイオロジー）」ですが、この語源はギリシア語で生命を意味する「bios（ビオス）」と学問を意味する「logos（ロゴス）」がくっついたもの。
心理学は英語で「psychology（サイコロジー）」ですが、この語源はギリシア語で心魂を意味する「psyche（プシュケー）」と学問を意味する「logos（ロゴス）」から成っています。

日常生活で用いられる「哲学」
先ほども出ましたが、人生観や経験、考え方を哲学と呼ぶこと。これは非学問的側面と言えるでしょう。
これはあくまでも日常的な意味を超越しません。
学問の世界での「哲学」の二面性
日常的な意味を超えても、つまり学問の領域に足を踏み入れても、学問的側面と非学問的側面は存在します。

彼らは、哲学とは体系的・論理的なもので、矛盾があってはならないというように考える傾向にありました。

これまで哲学のさまざまな意味について見てきましたが、そもそも「Philosophia（哲学）」のもともとの意味ってなに？ということを最後に見ていきましょう。
日常的な意味
まずおさらいとして、哲学の日常的な意味について触れておきます。
哲学が日常的に用いられる場合には、あくまでも「知を愛し求めること」という意味を超えません。
ソクラテス以前の哲学者にヘラクレイトスという人がいます。
彼は最古の哲学者であるタレスの次に古い哲学者です。
ヘラクレイトスは断片の中でこう記しています。
智恵を愛する人は、実際に、非常に多くの事柄に精通していなければならない。

では、哲学者（Philosophos）にとっての哲学とはどういう意味をもつのでしょうか。
哲学者（Philosophos）にとっての哲学は、心魂（psyche）への配慮を意味します。

つまり、知者でもなく無知でもない、自分が無知であることを知っている者。
そう、無知の知を心得た者です。
無知の知とは、単に自分が無知であることを知っているというだけではなく、人間にとって最も大切な事柄については無知であってはならないという意味も有しています。
全てのことを知る必要はありませんし、そのようなことは不可能でしょう。しかし、人間にとって最も大切な事柄については知っていなければならないということ。
では、その人間にとって最も大切な事柄とは何でしょうか。
それは、心魂（本当の自分）の善さを知り、それを実現すること。
（中略）ただ金銭を、できるだけ多く自分のものにしたいというようなことに気をつかっていて恥ずかしくはないのか。
評判や地位のことは気にしても、思慮と真実には気をつかわず、たましい（いのちそのもの）を、できるだけすぐれたよいものにするように、心を用いることもしないのだから、（以下略）
