今回はソクラテス以前の哲学者たち。南イタリアで活躍したクセノパネス、ピタゴラス、ヘラクレイトスについてまとめました。

時代が進んだ今回は、叙事詩や神話の世界から離れて、より哲学に近づいていく流れが読み取れます。

南イタリア
さてペルシアの興隆により、前６世紀後半にギリシア文化の中心は➁南イタリアに移ります。
ここでは最初の懐疑論者と呼ばれるクセノパネスや、ピタゴラス、ヘラクレイトスらが活躍しました。
クセノパネス
クセノパネス
最初の懐疑論者とも言われているクセノパネス。
彼はペルシアに占領されたイオニア地方の故国コロポンを去って、シケリア（シチリア）島に移住します。
これはイオニア学派の考えがイタリアへ伝播するきっかけの一つとなりました。
さて、クセノパネスの思想の中心は擬人化された神概念への批判にあります。
彼は、ホメロスやヘシオドスの叙事詩に出てくる神が、まるで人間のような姿であることに異議を唱えたのです。
そしてそれはやがて、人間の可能性の探究へと進んでいきます。
クセノパネスの思想をまとめると以下のようになります。
- 不道徳な言動の神々を語るな
- 人間の姿に似せた神々を語るな
- 人間の価値は知力にある
- 人間にとって確実な知はない。だからこそ人間は確実な知を探求する
それでは順を追って詳しく見ていきましょう。
不道徳な言動の神々を語るな
クセノパネス
ホメロスやヘシオドスは、人の世で破廉恥とされ非難の的とされるあらんかぎりのことを、神々に行わせた。 ――盗むこと、姦通すること、互いに騙し合うことを。

広く一般に言う「ギリシア神話」というと、神々がドロドロしたストーリーを繰り広げているイメージがあるかと思います。
神はそんな不道徳とは無縁であるにもかかわらず、愚かな人間のような振る舞いをさせたことをクセノパネスは批判しているのです。
人間の姿に似せた神々を語るな
クセノパネス
いわゆる「ギリシア神話」に出てくる神々を想像してみてください。
みんな人間のような姿かたちをしていませんか？
クセノパネスはこう例えます。
しかし、もし牛や馬やライオンが手を持っていたとしたら、あるいは手によって絵を描き、人間たちと同じような作品を作りえたとしたら、
馬たちは馬に似た神々の姿を、牛たちは牛に似た神々の姿を描いたことだろうし、身体を作るにもそれぞれ自分たちのもつ体つきと同じようなものにしたことだろう。

人間を元にして神を描いても、それは神ではありません。
さらにクセノパネスはこう述べます。
神は唯一であり、神々と人間どものうちでもっとも偉大であり、その体つきにおいても思惟においても、死すべき人間どもと少しも似ていない。

神と人間は中身も外見もまったく別物であるということをクセノパネスは主張しました。
人間の価値は知力にある
ではそんな私たち人間はどんな存在なのでしょうか。
クセノパネスは、人間の価値は体力ではなく知力にあると言いました。
（競技者は）この私とくらべれば、そんな恩恵を受ける値打ちは少しもありはしない。
なぜなら、私のもつ知恵は人や馬の体力よりも優るもの。
それなのに、まことにいわれなき人の世の慣わしとて、優れた知恵より体力を尊ぶのは、正しいことではない。

人間は体力ではなく、知力によって誇るべきであるとしたのです。
ここで注目すべきは、精神（知力）と身体（体力）を分けて考えたこと。
この精神と身体の分離が、のちの二元論思想へと繋がっていきます。
人間にとって確実な知はない、しかしだからこそ知を探求する。
人間の価値は知力にあるとしたクセノパネス。
しかし、人間にとって確実な知はないとも述べています。
すべてにつけて思惑あるのみ。

人間の知は憶説や想像による考えばかり。
人間は絶対的なものを手に入れることはできないというのです。
しかしクセノパネスは、だからこそ人間は知を探求するのだと主張します。
人間は、時とともに、探求によってよりよきものを発見していく。

しかし、人間は自分自身が持っていないものに憧れて、ベターなものを見つけようとするのです。

ピタゴラス
ピタゴラスの定理（三平方の定理）などで、名前は聞いたことがある方が多いかもしれません。
彼は数学者にして神学者、そして音楽家であったとも言えます。
ピタゴラスもまた、イオニア地方のペルシア専制支配を嫌い、４０歳の時にイタリアに移住。
王政支配に服従することは自由人にふさわしくないと考えていました。
ピタゴラス教団とその教義
彼は移住先の南イタリアを拠点とし、ピタゴラス教団を創設します。
これはピタゴラスの教説を重んじ研究する学派であっただけでなく、秘密結社でもあり、また一種の宗教団体でもあったと言われています。
教団では皆が集団生活をしながら、数学や哲学に励んでいました。 そんなピタゴラス教団の教義はこちらです。
順番に見ていきます。
そもそも、魂の浄めとは人間が持つ情念や思惑を排除すること。
ピタゴラスは万物は数であると考えました。
これはつまり、宇宙は秩序立っているということを意味します。
数は人間の思惑に左右されず、いつでもどこまでも数のままです。
このようなことから、数は人間の情念や思惑を排除するものであるとされました。
つまり、数は人間の魂を浄めるのです。
ピュタゴラス（ピタゴラス）学派の人たちは、肉体の浄めには医術を用い、魂の浄めのためには音楽（ムーシケー）を用いた。

ピタゴラス教団の人々は、魂の浄めに音楽を用いたと言います。
先ほどまで数は人間の魂を浄めるという話だったのに、どうして音楽？と思うかもしれません。
しかし音楽は五線譜と音符を用いて、数値で表すことができます。
一見まったく関係のないように思える数と音楽ですが、どちらも人間の思惑に影響されず、秩序立ったものなのです。
ではなぜ、魂を浄めなくてはならないのでしょうか。
それは教義にもあるように、輪廻転生という永劫の罰から救われるためです。
輪廻転生とは、生物が亡くなったあとに、再びこの世に生まれること。
その人生が善いものでなかった限り、何度も何度も繰り返し生まれ変わります。
このように何度もこの世に転生する永劫の罰から救われるために、音楽の音階や調和を聴いて魂を浄化するのです。
それは単に耳で音を聴くだけではありません。
さまよえる星（プラネテース）太陽、月、５惑星の７弦琴が奏でる、宇宙（コスモス）の音楽を聴くのです。
つまり、宇宙全体の調和（ハーモニー）や秩序を魂で感じるということ。
こうした魂そのものの浄化によって、人間はもともとの神性を取り戻し、天上へと戻っていくのです。
数と事物の関係
ピタゴラスは事物と数の類似関係に基づく宇宙観を持っていました。ここではピタゴラスが数字に持たせた意味を少し紹介します。
- 知性、実在
- 臆見・思惑
- 全体（初め・中・終わり）
- 正義
- 結婚
- 好機、アテナ女神
- 完全数
１は最初の数字であることから実在。
３は最初の奇数と偶数（１と２）を足したものなので全体を意味します。
４は等数の掛け合わせ（２×２、２+２）で、スクエア=正しいという意味があるので正義。
女性を意味する２と男性を意味する３を足した５は結婚。
７は１から１０までの数字の中で唯一、割ったり倍にしたりすることで１から１０までの数字を作り出すことができない数字です。
同時に、他の１から１０までの数字から同じように生成されない数字でもあります。
このことから、生まれもせず生みもしない７は、ゼウスの頭から生まれ、子供を産まない処女神であったアテナ女神を意味するとされました。
１０は完全数とされ、数の全体性の包括、つまり宇宙の構造を意味しています。

ヘラクレイトス
理（ロゴス）の哲学者であるヘラクレイトス。
ロゴスとは、古典ギリシア語で「言葉・割合・比・法則・理性…」など多くの意味を持つ単語です。
ヘラクレイトスにおけるロゴスは、ホメロスやヘシオドスの叙事詩や神話に対するもの。
つまり、より普遍的・哲学的な「語り」を意味する概念です。
この理（ロゴス）を聞いてそれを理解した以上は、それに合わせて、万物は一であるということに同意するのが知というものだ。

例えば数学の公式に当てはめて様々な問題を解くように、１つを理解すればすべてのことがわかるような統制原理がロゴスなのです。
宇宙は大きく燃え盛る火
ヘラクレイトスは、宇宙を激しく燃え盛る火であると考えました。
燃えながら大きく転化しつつも、全体としては均衡が保たれているのです。
こうしたマクロコスモスの秩序（ロゴス）を、我々人間・ミクロコスモスの内奥に探求する試みがヘラクレイトスの思想の中には含まれています。
彼は、人間と宇宙・自然は大小の違いはあれど同じであると考えていたのです。
この考え方は東洋的な思想に似ていると言えます。
哲学的な知は一度手に入れたらずっと手元にあるわけではない。
万象に隠されている知は万人に開かれている。

ヘラクレイトスは哲学的な知について、探求さえすれば誰にでも手に入れることができると考えていました。
しかし知は、一度手に入ってもずっと手元にあるわけではありません。
節度と倫理的生によって知を保たなければ、失われることもあると主張しました。
